OUR OCTOPUS HAS BEEN RENAMED O. DJINDA – THE WESTERN ROCK OCTOPUS

A recent scientific study has determined that the octopus we catch on our coast is a separate species, unique to Western Australia. Up until now, it was classified as O. tetricus, grouping it with the species that also lives on Australia’s east coast.

Now it’s been reclassified as O. djinda, and its common name has changed from the Gloomy Octopus, to a much more noble one – the Western Rock Octopus.

We love it. And we love even more that the study found the octopus is abundant and widely distributed along the west and south coast of Western Australia. The current level of fishing is unlikely to impact the population, which means the fishery is sustainable and the Western Rock Octopus will continue to thrive in the clean waters of WA.
